Kofi Annan, the UN secretary general, this week called on Israel to
ensure its responses were "proportionate and do not put civilians at
grave risk ".

This remark - or is it supposed to be a political statement? - infers that there is an enemy army in Palestine. There is no army in Palestine. There are political tribes or groups, some of whom are clearly the enemy of an invader - however every one of those men and women are certainly only civilians who object to having their country occupied. Annan's remark goes to show how far from reality the political will is from resolving the problems of history - ancient problems that were supposed to have come to an end for the unlimited future at the end of World War 2.

"A stitch in time saves nine" is the old adage, but the rip in the fabric of civilisation has gone beyond all hope of repair. While the UK and USA continue to usurp all justice and compassion for those who endure the evil of military rule, those two countries provoke war themselves, and military ambitions among others with incessant and unbridled arms sales; nations whose sense of proportion is always on the side of the bully, of the military ruler, the nationalist cock of the walk, and whose friends are always the prolific enemies of the beleaguered citizen. These UK and USA representatives of this famed "Western civilisation", (which is promoted as a civilisation of moral justice rescued from the improbable hands of god,) are maintained by democratic governments who obey the crushing rules of an elite of landed barrons. If the wealthy landowner has foolish sons, always one of them will know how to use the proffered key when the old man hands it on to him.....The use of government and "royal" prerogatives on the other side of a locked door is anyway only child's play, and that is why the seemingly eternal problems of the civilian, of mankind, will never be alleviated. We are faced with problems that common sense must return to every day - but the fantasy of he who has money in his fist ensures that news of our really serious environmental problems, social problems, and psychological problems never reach beyond the barriers that would open the gates to civil outrage and the determination to take action and make money pay for the work of the planet's reparation.

Some writers talk constantly of waking up a comatose population - but infact everybody understands quite clearly what is at stake and how their own lives are at the mercy of a "freedom" of choice that they can never avail of.... not the freedom of "free spirits" among the restless communities of students and artists, but the freedom to buy their way out of the hell constructed around them.

What proportional justice is our due ? What proportional claim can we make on the fortress of finance for our pain? As civilians of any country why are we guilty of the real pain of victims forced into violent confrontation with traditional murderers, military governments and guards ? Why do we carry this guilt further on into the future where the problems will really be insurmountable if we carry on living as the mute citizens of a status quo of stupidity and ignorance that is out of all proportion with the traditional intelligence of this planet's fantastic animal - man. Proportions, Kofi Annan? What do you really know about the proportion of security owed to your races or ours? Are we so separate that you cross the bridge from stupidity with public statements that no single citizen of the world could complacently utter without either laughing in utter despair, or realizing within himself the mind of insanity?
