'CATCHING A LIKENESS: PORTRAITS ON PAPER'
This exhibition will show how portraits from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries have varied in accordance with prevailing artistic fashions, favoured styles, techniques and media. The exhibition will include works by Antonio Pollaiuolo, Henry Fuseli, Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Paul Klee as well portraits by Irish artists; Adam Buck, Muriel Brandt, Patrick Hennessy, Michael Kane, Sean Keating and Brian Bourke. 'MASQUERADE AND SPECTACLE. THE CIRCUS AND TRAVELLING FAIR IN THE WORK OF JACK B YEATS'
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the artist's death, this exhibition of some 20 paintings, focuses on a subject that was crucial to Yeats' artistic development. The display includes a number of items from the Yeats Archive and paintings that have rarely been seen in public before.

Dúch Yesenin / Yesenin’s Ink is the title of the current exhibition of new work by Seán Ó Flaithearta at the Wexford Arts Centre.

The title of the exhibition refers to the Russian writer Sergei Yesenin who wrote his farewell poem in his own blood.  Yesenin was a tragic figure whose dual image of a devout and simple peasant poet and that of a rowdy and blasphemous exhibitionist reflected a wider readjustment to a changing world of the revolutionary era.  The readjustment stemmed from the changes in political and social circumstances instigated by the Bolshevik rule after the October Revolution.  Yesenin was an ardent supporter of the revolution but his beliefs that it would provide a better life for the country’s peasants were shortlived.  Yesenin’s inscription in his own blood of his last written work serves as a powerful entry point to Ó Flaithearta’s current work reflecting the importance of language in the development of political and social constructs, such as power and race relations, and the resulting formation of individual and national identities. 

Seán Ó Flaithearta is a native of the Aran Islands where he lives and works.  Dúch Yesenin stemmed from anthropological research on the genetic make-up of the native population of the Aran Islands.  The research discovered that the inhabitants on the Aran Islands had a different blood grouping from the population on the mainland. The closest blood relatives were found in north England. The results of long-term presence of English soldiers in the seventeenth century had a noticeable genetic impact, but none culturally. The focus on empirical example suggests that culture, race and ethnicity are ambiguous, fluid and entangled concepts that are not related to some essential or biological difference between groups but rather are socially constructed in specific places in specific times.

 

Through paintings, drawings, sculpture and video Ó Flaithearta uses blood as a unifying motif to question the perceived quality of our blood make-up which defines humankind, and our rank in it. The belief of being superior or inferior and how all this is categorised by the vital fluid of life in our veins, and the language of blood, for example bloodline, blue blood, and bad blood is explored. From a historical perspective race is depicted as complicated, fluid and unreliable subject, whose definitions have shifted over time. 

 

Seán Ó Flaithearta is a graduate of NCAD, Dublin, with further studies in the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre in Belgium and at Pennsylvania School of the Arts in the United States. His works have been exhibited nationally and internationally. His solo exhibitions to date include Deora Sáile (2005), Cosán Dearg (2001), Coiscéim na Trócaire (1995), Scadán Caoch (1993), Duán (1991) and I nGéibheann (1989). Ó Flaithearta  was the first artist in residence at Áras Éanna in Inis Oírr in 2000. His works are in public and private collections.

    ArtLinks to be Officially Launched on Monday 26th November 2007 in Kilkenny 

    Since November 2005 extensive in-depth consultation with creative practitioners has been undertaken in the formation of the ArtLinks programme. The programme is both ambitious and unique in Ireland in that the basis for the programme is led by creative practitioners across art forms and regions. During the rest of 2007 further publicity is intended to alert people, both practitioners and the public, locally and nationally to this scheme. On Monday 26th Nov 2007, ArtLinks will be officially launched in Kilkenny and ArtLinks members will be invited to attend.

    African Batik

    29th  September (Sat)  11 am  –   5.30 pm

    Batik, an Indonesian - Malay word for dyeing fabric using resist techniques is over 1,000 years old with evidence in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and India. In central Africa resist dyeing using cassava and rice paste has existed for centuries in the Yoruba tribe of Southern Nigeria and Senegal.

    In this workshop participants will create individual pieces through an introduction to resist and fabric dye techniques, drawing inspiration from traditional African patterns.

    Silk Papermaking – for beginners

    30th  September (Sun)  11 am  –   5 pm

    Participants will learn how to create beautiful, plain and colourful, textured, ‘fabric-like’ papers using a wide range of various silk fibres  - carded fibres from cocoons, hand dyed silk tops, throwsters waste fibres, silk threads …etc. The workshop introduces three silk papermaking methods and decorating techniques.

    Creative Willow Course

    Basket making

    6th October (Sat) 10 am – 5.00 pm

    As well as learning a traditional skill, participants will be introduced to basic basketry techniques, creating a beautiful willow basket or garden structure during the one-day workshop.

    Hand Papermaking – for beginners (natural fibres and recycled materials)

    • 13 – 14th October (Sat-Sun) 11 am – 5.00 pm
    • 10 – 11th November (Sat-Sun) 11 am – 5.00 pm

    The 2-day beginners workshop is designed to introduce participants to papermaking techniques using a combination of recycled materials and natural fibres of cotton, bamboo, desert grass and abaca. Incorporating fabrics, threads, dried plants, herbs and seeds into their pieces made from various pulps, they will create a variety of papers and unique images. The workshop also covers paper dyeing- and decorating techniques.

    Felt Making

    20th October (Sat) 11 am – 5 pm

    One-day workshop for beginners, introducing felt making techniques (wet felt) using hand-dyed sheep’s wool and decorative materials: silk threads and fibres. Participants will create their own handbags and/or colourful wall hangings.

    Silk Papermaking II – follow-on course

    21st October (Sun)  11 am  –   5 pm

    This is an experimental, one-day workshop for those who have participated in the beginner’s course or have previous experience in Silk Papermaking Techniques. Focusing on the “CMC – paste” and “Water – ironing” methods, we are going to work towards creating textured, sculptured, three-dimensional pieces from various silk fibres, combined with handmade tissue papers, textiles and plant fibres.

    Hand Papermaking (from natural fibres and recycled materials)

    FOLLOW-ON COURSE (ADVANCED)

    17 – 18th November (Sat-Sun) 11 am – 5.30 pm

    This workshop is a follow-on course; suitable for participants who wish to learn and experiment more after the beginners course, or have previous experience and/or practice in hand papermaking. It’s designed to give an introduction to creating unique plant papers from various plants and fibres.

    Focusing on the upcoming festive season the workshop also introduces decorating- and batik - techniques and paper-dyeing methods on handmade papers.

    Phase 1 (Outdoor Sculpture) of the Per Cent for Art Scheme is now under way and it is expected that this part of the project will be completed by mid September.

    Johnswell     School is now inviting expressions of interest from Artists for a Collaborative Project which would involve the school’s Staff and Pupils – the outcome of which would be an Indoor Permanent Art Exhibit.
    This project would begin later in September and would have a budget of €3,500.00.
